I hope this finds you and your families safe and enjoying good health. Like you, we are sheltering in place, trying our best to deal with inconsistent data and rules, and generally making our way through this extraordinary time!
I wanted to take a few minutes to let you know what we’re currently planning to do about the last speech of the 2019-2020 season as well as our plans for the new season, 2020-2021.
We presented seven of the eight scheduled speakers that were part of the 2019-2020 season. The last event was to be with the chefs, Samin Nosrat and Yotam Ottolenghi, originally scheduled the first week in April. We were forced to postpone due to theater closures and the shelter in place order.
We’ve rescheduled their appearance for December of 2020 and they’ve agreed to have us “live stream” the event as well as present their live appearance. In keeping with the times, all of this is subject to change. We’re not canceling and fully expect to present the chefs as soon as it is safe for you and them.
On to next season…
Ordinarily we’d have announced the speakers for the upcoming season at our April event and would be busily processing your renewals. In fact, all eight speakers are booked and we have 325,000 brochures sitting on a pallet at the printers along with deposits paid to speakers and theaters.
In light of the virus we’ve had to make some decisions. Our season has always been September to April. Given all that we now know about the Covid-19 virus, I don’t believe that a September start to the season is feasible. Accordingly I’ve rescheduled the four speeches which would have taken place in the fall of 2020 to the winter and spring of 2021.
Specifically, here are the 2020-2021 Series dates:
* Week of January 11-14 2021
* Week of February 1-4, 2021
* Week of February 15-18, 2021
* Week of March 1-4, 2021
* Week of March 15-18, 2021
* Week of April 5-8, 2021
* Week of May 3-6, 2021
* Week of June 7-10, 2021
Our usual schedule of Monday in Marin, Tuesday in Oakland, Wednesday in San Mateo and Thursday in Marin will apply.
It goes without saying that all of this is subject to change. I thought it was important to put a plan in place and continue to closely monitor events surrounding the virus.
Presuming that we are able to adhere to this schedule, we will announce speakers and ticket sales sometime in the fall, hopefully in September or October.
You might be interested to know that in the past we were expressly forbidden to record or broadcast any speakers remarks. We’ve gone back to all the speakers who will appear next season and received permission to “live stream” their appearances. We intend to offer this only to subscribers who hold tickets to the event and not as an alternative to your subscription.
If we are unable to present speakers in the theaters we will have to reschedule again.
Nobody is more anxious to resume the Series than I. Like all public events right now, we simply need to be sure that everyone is able to come together and participate safely. We will continue to update you with the latest information. We sincerely appreciate your participation in and support of the Speaker Series and beg your indulgence as we navigate these uncharted waters.
Keep a positive attitude and remember we’ve survived the depression, recessions, wars and bad government and we’re still the greatest country in the world.
Ultimately this too shall pass!
